METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods of removing gum from concrete usually depends on the gum’s age and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the chewing gum was left recently and it hasn’t penetrated the surface, we might be able to remove it by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping the gum off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a more forgiving consistency compared to a warm and stringy glob. Once the chewing gum is frozen, we slide a putty knife or scraper directly under the gum residue. Then we slide the scraper very slowly under the gum and the entire piece should then peel right off the concrete.

The above process is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove gum that has turned black, or is already smashed deep down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water power washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal service, we will not use high pressure because that will sometimes damage the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses more pressure than needed to safely clean commercial concrete surfaces. These surfaces can be destroyed a lot easier than most people think, especially if they’re only 1-2 years old. Concrete can require up to 100 years to cure. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our gum removal service.
